Complementary Therapies

“When I first came here, I used a cane to walk, but after a few sessions of yoga classes, I don’t need a cane anymore,” Little Red Door client Arcileo said. “It’s helped me a lot.”

Studies have shown positive effects from therapeutic massage and yoga, including stress reduction, decreased fatigue, pain management, anxiety and depression relief, and an overall improvement in quality of life.

Little Red Door offers free therapeutic massage and yoga classes for cancer patients, survivors, and their caregivers through our Door to Wellness program every Tuesday and Thursday from 10 am to 2 pm.  These services are provided by massage therapists and yoga instructors who are trained to work with cancer patients and can tailor services to meet your unique needs.  In addition to the benefits listed above, you will also enjoy being able to interact with other cancer survivors and caregivers who can relate to your cancer experience.

Yoga and Massage

Massages are scheduled every 30 minutes between 10 am and 2 pm

Yoga: see descriptions below, for dates and times please check here.

Chair relaxation yoga – Therapeutic modified yoga, mainly in, or using the support of, a chair.  Some basic yoga poses are modified for the student to practice in the chair, as well as joint-freeing movements, gentle flow, and movements that help relieve some side effects from treatment for cancer.  Class includes Pranayama, relaxation, and meditation.  Students can participate in this very gentle class at any level of experience, or in any level of treatment of care for cancer.

Basic gentle hatha yoga- Gentle, beginner yoga poses, with no flow in between poses.  A slower-paced class that focuses on the foundational yoga poses on the mat, including the basic sun salutation.  Class includes Pranayama (breathing practices), relaxation, and meditation.  Students should be able to practice on the mat or standing, without the main support of the chair

Restorative yoga-  Therapeutic yoga that relaxes and restores the body and the mind.  This class uses props to assist students in finding the most comfort in a pose that is held for an extended period of time, so that the student may be wholly present, and practice stillness, breath awareness, and centering.  Students should be able to come down to the mat for the duration of the class.

Transportation

“Thank you so very much for helping me in my time of need. I couldn’t of got through my treatment without your help!” -Vera

Cancer treatment often requires several weeks or months of frequent trips to the hospital for chemotherapy or radiation. An intense treatment schedule may make it very difficult for loved ones to provide all these rides and you may not feel up to driving yourself due to the side effects of treatment. Little Red Door Cancer Agency can provide reliable transportation to and from chemotherapy and radiation treatments through the use of cab vouchers, gas cards, or bus passes for trips. Cabs can accommodate wheelchairs and walkers.  (Cab vouchers and bus passes limited to Marion County).

If you are in need of transportation assistance, please contact us to see if you are eligible and to enroll.
