Walk into your local supermarket and you may notice it’s that time of the year again, kids are heading back to school! Parents are scouring the aisles with their eyes glued to a school supply list, getting their kids ready to head back into the classroom for this upcoming school year. The young ones are upset summer is over but, at the same time, are looking forward to seeing their friends again and being back in the classroom.
We here at the Little Red Door are no different. We just wrapped up our Big Red Bash Experience at the Indiana State Fair and are so excited we got a chance to interact with so many of you out in the community! Several of you have taken our #bashcancer pledge; pledging to reduce your risk for cancer one step at a time! We want to thank you for helping make Indiana a healthier place by preventing cancer before it even starts. But, like many of the families in our area, we are starting to transition out of summer mode and right into back to school mode.
This school year will mark the 5th year we will be bringing our HURU program to middle schools across Central Indiana. HURU or rather “Who are you” is our youth tobacco education program focused on having students look at tobacco through the lens of what they want their identity to be. The program shares basic facts about number of smokers, ingredients, and consequences of tobacco use as well as covering marketing and how products are being sold to teens.
Our program is 100% free to bring to your school. Last year we saw nearly 6,000 students with over 95% of them selecting “Strongly Agree” or “Agree” when asked if they have made the decision to remain tobacco free and we hope to reach even more students this year! We have already begun scheduling for the 2016-2017 school year and if you are interested in bringing HURU to your school or have any questions feel free to check out our website at www.littlereddoor.org/huru or email our Youth Tobacco Education Coordinator, Tina Jacob, at email@example.com!
