Little Red Door client Regina Simmons has been getting mammograms through our Mammography Assistance Program for years. But she has many other health needs that are outside of our scope.
“I can’t go to the doctor and get a physical,” said Simmons, who is currently uninsured. “If I have dental problems, I have to go and pay that on my own.”
But now she has the opportunity to receive all that thanks to the recent announcement of HIP 2.0. HIP 2.0 is the new version of the Healthy Indiana Plan and it is Governor Pence’s alternative to Medicaid expansion.
For a modest monthly contribution to their power account ($1-$25/mo), the plan offers coverage for adults ages 19-64 who are not disabled and fall below 138% of the Federal Poverty guidelines. This means that coverage will be available for an individual making less than $15,000.
More than 75% of our mammography assistance program clients, or more than 1,000 women like Regina, are eligible for HIP 2.0. While we were happy to provide those women with mammograms, now they are eligible to receive comprehensive health care including physicals, sick visits and other necessary cancer screenings.
Just like other insurance policies, HIP 2.0 is required to abide by the guidelines set by the Affordable Care Act. Cancer screenings like mammograms, colonoscopies and pap smears are now covered and we hope our clients will receive all the cancer screenings they are eligible for.
“If I have a cold or a flu I can go see a doctor–that’s the number one thing I’m looking forward to,” Simmons said.
Here at Little Red Door, we believe that insurance equals access to the health care system. More than 350,000 Hoosiers remain uninsured, but that is quickly changing.
Because of the advent of HIP 2.0, many of our clients are now going to have an opportunity to receive health insurance. We are already educating our clients on this new plan and encouraging them to see if they are eligible.
