Ann* is one of many Door to Wellness regulars who attend the program every week.

The program launched in April of this year to help cancer patients and survivors increase their self-sufficiency. So far our attendees have reported many benefits of the program such as improvements in flexibility, pain management, and increased energy levels.  Yoga and massage are helping our cancer patients deal with some of the draining and debilitating side effects of cancer treatment.

“I thank you so much for having this program,” Ann said. “I don’t schedule any appointments on Tuesdays because this is my time just for me.”

Our Door to Wellness yoga instructor and massage therapists are certified in oncology care. They can answer client questions and provide tips on things clients can do at home to continue to improve their well-being. This program has become an informal support group for cancer patients and survivors who can share their stories and relate to other participants.

Ann first contacted us last year in need of nutritional supplements, as she had lost weight due to her cancer treatment.  Ann is in her early 60’s and was diagnosed with lung cancer. She was receiving chemotherapy treatment, but was having difficulty getting back and forth to her appointments.  We set her up with our transportation services to ensure she made it to all of her treatments.

We gave her with a care package including education about her diagnosis, toiletries, and helpful items to use during her grueling chemotherapy sessions, including a blanket, socks, hat and activity books.  We also invited her to participate in one of our sessions of the American Cancer Society’s Look Good Feel Better Program, where she received make-up and skin care tips to use while in treatment.

For those interested in participating in Door to Wellness, it is offered every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  The program is open to cancer patients and survivors, their caregivers, and medical providers.  No appointment is necessary.  If you have more questions, please call us at 317-925-5595.
