“If it wasn’t for Little Red Door, I wouldn’t be here,”
By Jenny Anchondo Fox59 on 4/19/11
"My wife loves to cook. She always cooked big dinners. Well, now it's hard to cook for one person," said Bud Coffey, client of Little Red Door. He is an oral cancer survivor but hasn’t chewed a bite of food since 2006. That year, he discovered a hard, red sore on the side of his tongue. It was cancer. Doctors removed his tongue and half his throat. He can't swallow anymore but he is able to get nutritional supplements to pour into his feeding tube from Little Red Door Cancer Agency to keep him alive. Doctors blame his cancer on smoking, so the day he walked in for surgery at Methodist Hospital, Coffey said he quit. "I threw that pack of cigarettes on the sidewalk and I said, that's the last one," Coffey said.
Someone dies every hour from oral cancer. So whether it is quitting smoking or drinking or just getting a screening, he encourages you to take notice of oral cancer. The nutritional supplements Coffey uses for his feeding tube come from Little Red Door Cancer Agency. When he couldn’t eat anymore, the supplements brought him from just 100 pounds to the more than 130 pounds he is now. If you would like more information on quitting smoking please click the link.
